A Charter Government rules Anne Arundel County. This form of government is comprised of the Executive Branch and the Legislative Branch. The County Executive is the official head of the County Government.
The Legislative Branch is the County Council. Anne Arundel County is divided into seven Councilmanic Districts, with each district having one Councilman on the Council. Councilmen are elected to a four-year term of office and can only serve two terms. The citizens in each individual district elect their Councilman. |
Council meetings are held in the evenings to make them more accessible to the public. They are also televised on a local county channel on cable television. During these meeting we review legislation that has been introduced and listen to public comment. Sometimes these meeting can last until midnight. Since we can only vote on a legislative day, our meetings will normally end at that time.
Since I represent the citizens in a certain district I spend a lot of time attending community meetings. There I can hear first hand what the citizens are concerned about in their particular areas. I work with the various county agencies to make certain their requests are addressed.
I also attend meetings of committees that are organized to address the issues of the county and then possible draft new legislation. Most of these committees are made up of representatives from the county, various businesses, private practices, etc.
I am often asked to attend Eagle Banquets, grand openings of businesses, business meetings, award ceremonies and various other activities.
Since my position is considered part-time I still maintain my law practice. Due to this, I have a Legislative Aide who manages my council office. She is the person that constituents will contact if they need information, have a problem, or want to set up an appointment to see me. She will direct them to the proper departments or make inquiries to solve their problems for them.
Sincerely,
Councilman Bill D. Burlison
