Governor, Nebraska

Mike Johanns

I’m so pleased that you have taken an interest in the different levels of government and, more specifically, the great State of Nebraska. I believe it’s vital that students and our newest voters have a good understanding of our democratic system of government and our leaders.

Nebraska is home to perhaps the most unique form of government in the United States. I’m referring, of course, to our non-partisan Unicameral Legislature. Nebraska’s one-house Legislature is unlike the usual two houses of government used by 49 other states and the federal government which are comprised of a House of Representatives and Senate.

As Governor, I am the chief executive for our state, much like the President is for the United States. I oversee the operation of state agencies, appoint citizens to various boards and commissions, and present a budget plan to the Legislature for approval every two years. I also serve(d) in several national leadership positions with the Midwest Governors’ Conference, the Governors’ Public Power Alliance, the Governors’ Ethanol Coalition, the Governors’ Bio-Tech Partnership and the National Governors’ Association.

My days and weeks are typically packed with meetings, news conferences, interviews, ribbon cuttings, dinners, luncheons, travel - you name it! I firmly believe that elected officials need to keep in direct contact with the residents of their state, so part of my job is to travel around our state and visit with Nebraskans. I also meet with leaders of other countries in an effort to get them to buy Nebraska agricultural products and travel to Washington, D.C. on occasion for meetings with our federal leaders. But one of my very favorite things to do as Governor is visit Nebraska schools and talk with young people.

Again, thank you for taking an active interest in our government. If you would like more information about Nebraska, visit our web site at www.state.ne.us.

Sincerely,

Mike Johanns
