The
Police Chief performs the professional, administrative and
supervisory tasks in directing the operation and activities of
the Police Department. They plan, direct, manage and oversee the
activities and operations of the Police Department including law
enforcement, criminal investigations, support services, and
administrative functions. The Chief of Police is responsible for
the preservation of peace within the community; protection of
life and property; and enforcement of city ordinances, state and
federal law where applicable.
Normally,
this is an at-will position supervised by the Mayor which
includes adherence to federal, state and local laws, policies and
procedures. The Chief of Police is responsible for the
supervision, direction, and personnel management of Police
Department staff. Normally, the Police Chief works very closely
with the City Manager.
Typical
duties of a Police Chief could include such things as developing,
and approving for the police department such things as
departmental policies, procedures and plans; formulates,
recommends, and implements departmental priorities, goals and
objectives. Working with the Mayor and City Council (or
legislative body) on administrative matters, legislation and
policies, making recommendations for action.
The
Police Chief would also assume the direct command of a major
problem or special action as needed. They are responsible for the
enforcement of federal, state and local law enforcement codes and
standards. The Police Chief would also direct cooperative efforts
with local, state, and federal law enforcement officials in the
apprehension and detention of wanted persons.
In
some cases, the Police Chief is elected, but ordinarily, this is
an appointed position, normally appointed by the Municipalities
Executive Committee.
