A Nevada resident for over 26 years, Barbara Cegavske is a Nevada State Senator representing District 8 in Clark County. During the 2003 legislative session, Senator Cegavske is serving as the Vice-Chair on both the Senate Human Resources & Facilities and Legislative Affairs Committees as well as being a member of the Senate Finance Committee. When she is not serving the citizens of Nevada, Senator Cegavske is employed as the Director of Community Relations for the WestCare Foundation. |
In 2002, Senator Cegavske was appointed to Nevada’s Vocational Rehabilitation Council and the Nevada Public Education Foundation by Governor Guinn; graduated from the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Las Vegas program and completed CSG’s Henry Toll Fellowship program. Always active in state government, Senator Cegavske served as District 5’s Assemblywoman for 3 terms from 1997 to 2001. During her last term as an Assemblywoman, Senator Cegavske served as Assistant Minority Leader in the Nevada Assembly and sat on the Ways & Means, Education and Transportation committees as in the 1999 session.
In addition to her Senate duties, Cegavske serves on many national legislative committees. Her service to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) includes an appointment in 2001 to serve as Workforce Development Vice-Chair on the Federal Issues (AFI) Education, Labor and Job Training committee. Senator Cegavske also serves on the Committee on the Southern Border for the Council of the State Governments and is a member of the American Legislative Exchange Council’s (ALEC) Education Task Force. With regard to her service to the Education Commission of the States (ECS), Cegavske was appointed to serve as vice chair of the Nominating Committee and is a member on both the Steering Committee and the Executive Committee for 2001-2002.
Cegavske was also selected to participate in the Western Legislative Academy (WLA), a new training institute developed by the Council of State Governments – West (CSG-West). Cegavske was elected Class President of the 2000-2001 WLA Leadership Class and also serves as a member of their Future of Western Legislators Committee and the Strategic Planning Committee.
During the 2002 interim, Cegavske served on the Interim Finance Committee and the Committee to Consult with the Director. Cegavske’s community activities have included her membership on the Inclusion Task Force for the State of Nevada, the Special Education Licensure Task Force for the State of Nevada, and the Executive Board of the former Las Vegas PTA Area Council. She has also served as chairperson of the Nevada Education Legislative Grassroots Committee and the District F Parent Advisory Committee as well as a state liaison to the Nevada State Parent Coalition and a child advocate to the Nevada State Legislature.
In addition, Cegavske is a member of the Southwest Area Command’s Community Leadership Team, a group that works with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Cegavske also is the State Director of Women in Government (WIG) and the Junior League of Las Vegas and serves on the board of directors for the Las Vegas Performing Arts Inc., and CLASS.
In 1999, Assemblywoman Cegavske received the “Crystal Apple” award for her dedication and commitment to the students of the Clark County School District. At that time Cegavske was recognized for her history of service to the area’s schools and the District F PAC as well as the multitude of district committees she has served on over the last decade. Those Clark County School District committees have included the Strategic Planning 2000, Public Concern Subcommittee, Special Education, Least Restrictive Environment Committee and Testing and Evaluation. She is a former president of the Cashman Middle School Parent Advisory Council and former PTA president and board member of R. Guild Gray Elementary School. In addition, Cegavske was named to the Clark County School District Parent Hall of Fame in 1996.
Barbara and her husband, Tim, have two children: Adam 22, Bret, 21.
