Mayor - City of Owensboro, Kentucky

Mayor Waymond Morris

Biography

As Mayor Pro Tem of the Owensboro City Commission, Mayor Waymond Morris was appointed to the office of Mayor in May of 1995 when former Mayor David Adkisson resigned.  He ran successfully in the November 1995 Mayoral Election, serving a one-time, five-year term (Jan. 1, 1996 – December 31, 2000); and was again re-elected to a second term as Mayor in the November 2000 General Election (Jan. 1, 2001 – Dec. 31, 2004).

Mayor Morris is a graduate of the University of Kentucky, holding a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and History, and a minor in English.  He received a Master of Arts in Education from Western Kentucky University, as well as a Rank I in Education in Administration and Finance.

Waymond Morris has 36 years of experience in education, serving as teacher, coach, assistant Superintendent and Principal.  He served as Principal of Daviess County high School from 1982 until his retirement in June of 1995.  Active in professional organizations throughout the State, Mayor Morris received many honors during his years in education, including “Kentucky Principal of the Year” in 1989.  During his last year of tenure at Daviess County High School, Daviess County High students showed the most improvement of any high school in the Commonwealth of Kentucky under KERA (the Kentucky Education Reform Act).

Waymond Morris has also been active in the Owensboro-Daviess County community, involved in and serving on several boards and agencies.  His interest in politics first took root in high school when he became involved in a local campaign, and continued in college where he participated in student government.

Waymond Morris has served on Owensboro’s Board of Commissioners since 1984, first as a Commissioner, three-times named Mayor Pro Tem, and then as Mayor.  He has been a full-time, hands-on Mayor, trying to bring an understanding of the functions of city government to the entire community.
