Library Control

The County administrators announced notion of taking over the library sounds like a smoke room politically conceived collusion to muddy the library's future. A steady source of funding, from both the city and county, is paramount. Which of the two government bodies operates the library is not a substantive issue worth debating.

The real issue is being clouded by both the city manager and the county administrator. Both are setting the stage to use the recent upsurge in community support for the library as a WEDGE to get voters to extend the local option sales tax (LOST) when it comes up for renewal in a few years. Meanwhile, the management issue will be used to procrastinate making any immediate committment. If the motive is other than that indicated, the administrators are challenged to provide alternate justification for the change. The fact that 70 % of the library users are county residents is raison d'être without merit.
