Achieving Real Freedom - U.S. Must Lead The Way
Stemming The Tide Of Worldwide Religious Persecution

Without question The United States has become the leader of the free world. No other nation in history has amassed this kind of technology and resources. The big question is: Will we now use this strength to help make the world a better place to live? Are we willing to direct our influence and our money towards a policy of bringing freedom of conscience to the world by focusing on this one vital issue: freedom of thought? The power of diplomacy must be used in every arena to put an end to the suffering of those who only seek to choose their beliefs and not have them limited by tyrants or chosen for them by evil government leaders.
Although changing ones philosophy or ideology is no big deal in free societies there are those countries in the world that still imprison and execute their citizens for this activity. It will only stop when pressure is brought to bear on those regimes who espouse it, and on those members of our own government, who are elected to do our bidding in Washington, DC. The time has come to let our voices be heard loud and clear on this subject around the world.
Why should we care? Is it our business to go about the world telling other governments what they are doing wrong? The clear answer is YES! The answer becomes obvious when we take a closer look at just what is happening and why. Nothing quite reveals problems in a society, including terrorism, like the way a government treats its citizens regarding freedom to express themselves. Those nations that repress freedom of thought clearly breed the most radical extremists. It can be said that the world will be a much safer place when more cultures understand this and begin to teach religious tolerance.
Believe it or not Iraq has a better start on this understanding than some. Bringing a new regime, and a better government to this region will be a good place to start in declaring to the world that the United States will never rest easy until all nations in the community of nations begin to allow their citizens to pick their religion or ideology and meet together with others of like mind to worship and study. We must also pressure the leaders of all countries to adopt a policy of telling their citizens that persecution is just plain wrong and unlawful.
It is time for our leaders to stand up for what is right. We must begin to send a message to those representatives and senators that the time has come for action. We could start by bringing pressure to bear on such countries as China, North Korea, Iran, Turkmenistan, The Sudan, Burma, and Saudi Arabia. Appeals directly to these abusive countries by citizens of free nations seems to bring little change.
The message has to come from leaders with vision in Washington. It is way past time to adopt a strategy that says religious persecution is wrong and must stop. The United Nations resolution regarding this matter has had little effect. Leaders of the oppressive societies have shown litte interest in change. The killing continues. Many grow old and die in foreign prisons. How long will we sit idly by and watch. We must do something now.
