Secular
culture often mimics theology in the customs and ideologies that impregnate
themselves in day to day living and discourse. Often, simple words or
phrases carry great weight in their implications for mankind, with
underlying assumptions of truth going unchallenged by people both wise and
foolish. Below we shall examine but a few words, concepts, and phrases,
which both churched and unchurched should well consider.
- Does that
work for you? We are so concerned about things working for us
that we fail to consider that our Lord may have something to say about
that which we attempt. The Scripture says: "The way of a fool
[is] right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel [is]
wise." [Pro 12:15] Modern men seek to order their lives
according to what appears right in their own eyes - their families,
their employment, their commitments. Men go a whoring [Num 15:39]
after many things they think are good and right, without seeking counsel
from their King.
- There is
unity in diversity One of the most popular nonsense phrases of the past
century. Kind of like saying there is peace in genocide. Though
in the Bible we see godly people with their own quirky personalities,
God demanded mind-numbing uniformity of behaviour from Israel. Diversity,
as we know it today, consists of the sum of people who do what works
for them.
- It's not
fair! ...to which the response must be, "according to whom?"
If you can arise and truthfully claim to be free from the stain of sin,
then I agree that whatever adversity is happening in your life isn't
fair. Paul says in Romans, quoting the Psalms, that there is no one
righteous, not one. Therefore we deserve only death...all of us. What
really isn't fair is that every sick and filthy deed we do in this life,
Christ died for all of it. That's not fair. So quit whining and
be happy you still draw breath.
- Power of
Pride I vote this the most ignorant bumper sticker of the 21st century.
"For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil
thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, [t]hefts, covetousness,
wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride,
foolishness: [a]ll these evil things come from within, and defile the
man." [Mar 7:21-23]
- Democracy We
cling to the myth of democracy like a tick on a drowning dog. For one
thing, this nation never was a democracy - the Founders were scared to
death of democracy for the bad examples which then existed in history.
Democracy is foreign to God's word, a blueprint for autocracy if there
ever was one. Better a repentant and humble king than the den of wicked
murderers currently residing in the seat of power.
- Equality
Again, Scripture teaches contrary to the wisdom of the day. We are equal
only in our magnitude of sin and our deserving the pain of a thousand
deaths. The Lord plainly bestows different abilities to different
people, and uses us in our state for His good pleasure. Man struggles
against this, screaming, "it's not fair!"
- E Pluribus
Unum Latin for from many, one. The motto of our nation, it refers
to the association of states through the federal government. This puts a
crimp in Lincoln's "union preceded the states" nonsense. But I
digress...Scripture teaches from one, many - in that through one
man [Adam] sin and death entered the world. Likewise, through one man
[Christ] would many be saved from their sins. As usual, the secular
church turns Scripture upside-down to form its own morality.
- Entitlement
See It's not fair!
- Health Care
Modern men have substituted the preservation of their mortal bodies for
the preservation of their souls. And how well that is, since the mortal
body is all the unsaved have, for they will lose their souls to the pits
of hell. The Lord allows temporal blessings upon the wicked; for
it is the only solace they have preceding their eternal damnation.
- Lifestyle A
term meaning "how can we dress up fornication to make it look
attractive today?" Every time I pass by an exhibit hall proclaiming
a 'Lifestyles' show, it makes me ill. Would that so many people turn out
for a 'Salvation Show...'
As
you go about the world, be critical of the philosophy thrust upon you, even
philosophy promulgated by certain so-called ministers of the Word. To one
who has acquired a critical eye regarding these things, the weight of
worldly contradictions to the Gospel is overwhelming. The Bible is the
ultimate self-help book, for in it we learn that we are helpless to help
ourselves. The work has already been perfected through Jesus, the course is
run and paid for, the tests have been taken and passed, the steps have been
followed perfectly. Rest only in Him.
