Fourth Dimension Report
Let's Have A Contest

LET'S HAVE A CONTEST
I've been writing the Fourth Dimension for some 4 or 5 years.   It was named for the district I represented in the legislature, 4th House District.   Now that I'm no longer in the legislature, it has been suggested that I should change the name, expand the content and keep writing.   One of these days I may even ask people to subscribe.   But for now, I only want to find the name that you, the readers, would like for me to use in the future.  The contest will run for the next four weeks and then I'll have a team of three people who will review all the names and present me with the top three recommendations.   I'll then make a decision.  So, it's up to you to find the right name. Please be generous in your recommendations.   Truly want the column to continue to be read by all of you.  Thanks

CAN NOW FIND MY WAY, HOPEFULLY, AROUND THE OWCC/UWF CENTER
Following last week's article about not being able to find my way around the OWCC/UWF campus, I received a note from Dr. Bob Richburg.   He said he was sorry I had trouble and would be back in touch with me.  Yesterday (Tuesday) I received a welcomed message from Dr. David Goetsch.   The message he sent follows:

"Jerry old friend, all I can say is I throw myself on the mercy of the "Melvin Court."  Since you pointed out our directional shortcomings on the FWB Campus in your Fourth Dimension of December 9, 2002, I've been a busy bee following up.  You may now tell your readers in your next report that thanks to the efforts of their favorite legislator (should have stated "former legislator") here is the setup as it now stands for visitors to the FWB Campus:

1.      An information person is available at the registration window in the Administration Building (Building 1) until 6:30 p.m.  This person can quickly locate any student or teacher on campus.

2.      After 6:30 pm an information person is available until 10:30 pm in Room 402 of Building 4.  This person can quickly locate any student or teacher on campus.

3.      We have a large map of the campus at the front of the Administration Building (right in front of the visitor's parking places)

4.      We have redirected campus lighting so that the signs with Building numbers and names can be more easily seen at night.

5.      If all else fails, there are three "emergency poles" strategically located on the campus where visitors can simply press a button to summon the deputy.

6.      The only thing I wasn't able to do (from your report) was put the large numbers on top of each building. But with the other five, it's a lot easier for visitors to find their way now.

How about letting your readers know about this for me in your next report so my telephone will stop ringing."

So, folks, here's the information.   Thanks, David.  Truly appreciate, but I'm still thinking of taking up a collection for the numbers high up on the buildings.

STILL PUSHING THE BEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ
Just noticed a quote from Dr. Balint Vazsonyi, the Hungarian Immigrant who came to this country and, as far as I'm concerned, has made a profound impression on me.   His book, "America's 30 Years War - Who Is Winning" has caused me to think sincerely about our great country and why it is so great.   I highly recommend this book to all junior high and high school students, college and university students, law students, teachers and professors, and to all individuals who truly love this great country.  A couple of years ago Dr. Vazsonyi, at my invitation, came to Okaloosa Walton Community College and addressed a group of individuals. Following his appearance, I purchased a couple of cases of his books with the intention of selling them to others.   I still have a few and would like to make them available to those interested at the special price of $15.00 plus 6% sales tax for a total of $15.90.  Just send me a check or money order for $15.90 plus $2.00 postage to Jerry Melvin Consulting, P. O. Box 902, Fort Walton Beach, FL 32549, and I'll have your book on the way. These are hard cover books that usually sell for much more.  It's a great book to begin a discussion group around.  Anyone interested in starting a discussion group, let me know and I'll assist.

WHAT YOU CAN LEARN FROM A GROUP OF "OLD TIMERS"!
Sitting around the coffee group table Wednesday morning, individuals began talking about old time "medical remedies" as they remembered them.  Such things as Asphidity (can't find the correct spelling anywhere) Poultices, mustard rubs, kerosene for nail punctures, and some that were downright funny.  So I thought it might be interesting to have you, the reader, send me the remedies you remember hearing about from your parents and grandparents and I'll put them together with those I'm getting from people around the coffee table and then I'll pass them along.  Should prove really interesting reading.   Who knows, might find something that works in today's world.  Please email your item so I can complete the article for next week.

SOME RESPONSES TO LAST WEEK
Last week I mentioned how individuals were always blaming others such as the suite against McDonalds because an individual was fat.  They were blaming McDonalds for selling fatty foods.  No mention of the fact that the individual personally ordered and ate the food and no one made him do it.

One response from Larren Hagen -  "Jerry, how is this any different than a woman who smoked for forty years and dies from cancer, whose husband sues and a really stupid jury (true liberals) awards millions of dollars to the husband? Lawyers are taking the model to other things, such as McDonalds, and there probably isn't any end to it.  Don't get me wrong, I agree with you on the topic.   And, by the way, I'm not a smoker, but I can't agree with the encroachments on their rights and the theft of money (taxes) by hypocritical governments in this regard.  It just seems to me that people, in general and by and large, are IRRESPONSIBLE.

Had a nice reply from Bill Bland relative to the riotous sports fans and players in last week's column.  He wrote: "I agree whole-heartedly with you!  There should be a constant threat hanging over the schools, just like the NCAA watchdogs that scrutinize athletic programs for illegal actions, and punish the schools who commit the violations. I don't think it should be triggered by just one or two instances.   The school can't take effective action against unusual instances of violence without being given a reasonable chance to cure the problem.  Otherwise it's like "throwing out the baby with the bath water" - hasty "band-aids" on the problem seldom work for very long. I believe that the NCAA should also punish the coaches under whose regime the violations occurred, as well as the schools that presently end up as the only entity being penalized. Usually the coaches are long gone, moving on to work elsewhere before the NCAA has completed the investigation,

THANKS TO MORGAN LAMB
My good friend, Morgan Land has a way of finding some interesting things.   He has recently sent me one titled, OLD AGE.   Thought I'd pass it along.

Long ago when men cursed and beat the ground with sticks, it was called witchcraft ----- Today, it's called golf. Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it. The older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for. Some people try to turn back their odometers.  Not me, I want people to know "why" I look this way.   I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved. How old would you be if you didn't know how old you are? When you are dissatisfied and would like to go back to youth, think of Algebra. You know you are getting old when everything either dries up or leaks. One of the many things no one tells you about aging is that it is such a nice change from being young. One must wait until evening to see how splendid the day has been. Ah, being young is beautiful, but being old is comfortable. Old age is when former classmates are so gray and wrinkled and bald, they don't recognize you. If you don't learn to laugh at trouble, you won't have anything to laugh at when you are old. First you forget names, and then you forget faces. Then you forget to pull up your zipper, then - Oh my goodness you forgot to pull your zipper down! If you jog in a jogging suit, lounge in lounging pajamas, and smoke in a smoking jacket, WHY would anyone want to wear a windbreaker? And best of all.... I don't know how I got over the hill without getting to the top.

EDUCATION INFORMATION
Just learned about an organization called CAEL (Council for Adult and Experiential Learning), a national leader in the fields of adult learning and workforce development. Founded in 1974, under the auspices of the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, New Jersey, CAEL has been providing colleges and universities, companies, labor organizations and state and local governments with the tools and strategies they need for creating practical, effective lifelong learning solutions.  For more information, go to
www.CAEL.ORG .

AWE! COME ON!
I just can't understand what everyone is such an uproar over the statement Senator Trent Lott made.  All he was doing was pandering to a doting 100 year old gentleman who had just retired from the U.S. Senate, Senator Strom Thurman.   I would have probably said a lot more just to make Sen. Thurman feel even better. If Lott steps down, they will be like a "feeding frenzy of sharks" after everyone. It's high time that the whining blacks, socialists, Hollywood nothings, and others get their fannies off their shoulders and loosen up a little.   You simply can't be offended by everything everyone says.  Me thinks some people are really trying to make "political Hay" out of the issue.   Where are they when it comes to the antics and statements by Jesse Jackson and that loud-mouthed Sharpton guy?  Perhaps people should start a real campaign about these two as well as that new young congressman from Mississippi who's trying to make a name for himself.  You don't see the Socialist Press members after them, do you?   Draw your own conclusion!

QUOTE FOR THE WEEK
No great advance has ever been made in science, politics or religion, without controversy!  Lyman Beecher  (1777 - 1853)

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Should Senator Lott give in and step down as President of the Senate?

PS
Please remember to send me your favorite home medical remedies as you remember them from your parents and/or grandparents.

Remember why we celebrate this very important season.  Tell your children why and let's try to make it a loving and giving season all year long.
