Global Health Corps Act of 2005 (S-850).

Senator Bill Frist
04/27/2005

I'm excited about it because I know it can do good for people in need around the world.

The bill would coordinate, unify and focus health care personnel and services abroad by U.S. government agencies, private organizations and U.S. citizens serving as volunteers.

It's an opportunity for us to provide a broad range of health care services in some of the most desperate and impoverished regions of the world ... medical, nursing and dental care ... preventive care ... sanitation ... health care training and education.

Establishing a volunteer health corps to provide aid and create grassroots relationships will both substantially improve health care and foster good will around the world toward our nation.

Having treated patients in many of these areas -- ravaged by war and poverty -- you can imagine that this cause is near and dear to my heart.

Fact is, there are so many simple steps that we can take here at home that will alleviate unimaginable -- and needless -- suffering abroad.

American generosity knows no bounds when it comes to humanitarian relief. It is in our character. It is in our spirit. And just as we unleash the power of freedom in new regions of the world, so too must we begin to unleash the power of medicine and the caring, compassion and healing that comes with it.

MEDICINE IS A CURRENCY OF PEACE.

Bill Frist
