Supreme Court's Decision will Awaken the Sleeping Giant

Washington, DC - In a sharply divided opinion, the Supreme Court struck down a Texas law that banned same-sex sodomy. The Court, in a 6 to 3 opinion, found that the law violated the right to privacy. Liberty Counsel, which filed an amicus brief urging the Court to uphold the law, stated that today's decision will awaken the sleeping giant of the majority of Americans who will fight even harder to preserve traditional marriage.

Mathew D. Staver, President and General Counsel of Liberty Counsel, commented, "This decision will serve as a wakeup call to the majority of Americans who believe in traditional marriage and oppose same-sex unions. Today's decision is a very narrow one because it only applies to laws in a handful of states. However, taking away any rights of the states to regulate same-sex sexual conduct should raise the concerns of everyone who believes in preserving traditional marriage. Today's decision has awakened a sleeping giant and will galvanize and reinvigorate the majority of Americans who believe in traditional marriage but have ignored the radical agenda of the same-sex marriage movement. The goal of the radical homosexual agenda is to eliminate any and all laws regulating consensual sexual conduct. This would mean the elimination of laws banning polygamy as well as those that ban sex between adults and minors."

Staver concluded, "The split decision underscores the importance of the next Supreme Court appointment, not only on the issue of abortion but now on the issue of same-sex unions. This case also illustrates the problem with an active judiciary which takes away the rights of the people. Regulating homosexual conduct and marriage is the right of the people, to be exercised through the legislative, rather than judicial branches of government."

GUARDIAN SAYS J.D.S. SHOULD CARRY BABY TO TERM

Yesterday Judge Lawrence Kirkwood approved a plan submitted by Patti Riley Jarrell, the appointed guardian for J.D.S., the 22-year-old woman who is now in her 27th to 28th week of pregnancy. Ms. Jarrell told the judge that doctors who examined J.D.S. stated she was in good health and two sonograms of her unborn baby also indicate the baby is in good health. Based on the recommendation of the doctors and the guardian, Judge Kirkwood approved a plan to have J.D.S. carry her baby to term. The baby will be placed for adoption.

Despite this good news, the ultra liberal National Organization for Women expressed outrage because the spokesperson for the group wanted J.D.S. to abort the child, stating that giving birth would not "improve" J.D.S.'s life. Mathew D. Staver, president and general counsel for Liberty Counsel, commented, "I am more than pleased that J.D.S. is doing well and her baby will be born. There are many families eager to provide a loving home for this child. The comments by the National Organization for Women illustrate how out of touch this group is with the mainstream. NOW's only purpose in life is to push women into killing their children."
