The Filibuster Debacle

By Monty Rainey
November 14, 2003

The scheduled 30-hour Senate filibuster of judicial nominations has ended, unsuccessfully, as we all knew it would. It appears the only thing accomplished by the filibuster was to bring the issue, once again, into the headlines and create more ammunition against the Democrat obstructionists.

As is usually the case, there is no shortage of imbecilic rhetoric spewing from the mouths of the filibustering (and I use the term loosely) Democrat Senators. Take for example, Chuck Shummer (D-NY), who claims the judicial nominees being refused an up or down vote are “out of the mainstream.” Oh, really? How is it then that Justice Janice Brown of California received over 75% of the votes in her last reconfirmation? How many of the filibustering Democrat Senators can boast such overwhelming support from their constituents? Judge Priscilla Owen received similar support from her Texas constituents.

To take Shummer’s idiotic statement even further, we now have a Republican President, a Republican majority in the Senate, and a Republican majority in the House. That pretty much solidifies the argument that ‘mainstream’ America is solidly Republican, or at the very least, has a conservative set of values at its core.

Priscilla Owen has been filibustered, so the Democrats claim, because she once argued in one case that parents should play a role in the decision-making process for their minor daughter's quest for an abortion. I hate to be the one to break the news to the Senior Senator from New York, but that is a mainstream American stance. It is the Democrats, with their persistent posturing to push America further into a socialist society that is out of touch with the mainstream agenda.

Through my affiliation with such fine organizations as the Republican National Hispanic Assembly, which is growing at a very rapid pace, I am encouraged by the fact that educated and professional Hispanics in America are seeing the Democrat agenda for what it truly is, a system that would hobble their chances for success and prosperity. More and more, Hispanics and other minorities are seeing the transparency of the liberal pandering and racial hypocrisy and are allowing their traditional and inherent conservative ideals to surface.

I believe this issue, like many others, will be a thorn in the side of Democrats come next November. Though I would like to see a real filibuster forced upon the Democrats, I am glad to see this issue reappear in the national headlines. The voters need to be continually reminded of the obstructionism that is being force fed to this administration which is fueled by sheer hatred for our President and the Republican majority. The power hungry Democrats cannot fathom the idea that it is their left wing extremism that is out of touch with ‘mainstream’ America. Perhaps next November, they will be reminded.
