Mexican
Insult

Now
that the elections are over and the President has
the backing he needs to get things done in the War
on Terrorism, our leaders need to begin focusing
attention on some other domestic issues. For one,
immigration. The United States received a blatant
slap in the face from our southern neighbors last
week.
On
Thursday, November 7, the Mexican Senate filed a
formal complaint with the United Nations against
the United States for systematically violating the
rights of (illegal) Mexican migrants. At the
office of the UN High Commissioner for Human
Rights, Theirry del Prado, Mexican Senators
accused the United States of arbitrarily detaining
(illegal) migrants. To that, I say, and I hope the
President will too, keep them the hell out of our
country!
Sen.
Sadot Sanchez, president of Mexico’s Senate
Human Rights Committee said many of the 53
(illegal) Mexicans currently on death row in the
United States have been deprived of their right to
consular access.
This
all comes just one day after the U.S. Agency for
International Development graciously gave $350,000
to the Hospital General de Nogales in an effort to
improve Mexican border hospitals. U.S. hospitals
wrote off $200 million in 2000 for medical costs
to treat illegal aliens who crossed the border for
medical attention. The gift to the Mexican
hospital; is part of a test program to try to
improve medical conditions across the border in
hopes of eliminating some of the enormous costs
being absorbed each year by U.S. hospitals. If it
proves successful, more money will be forthcoming.
This
is typical of the kind of generosity the U.S. has
always shown to their southern neighbors, only to
be the recipient of such accusations. I know
President Bush and Mexican President Vincente Fox
are close friends, but I hope the President does
not allow that friendship to cloud his judgment.
Right
now, Mexican Foreign Relations Secretary Jorge
Castaneda is gearing up to try to strike a deal
with the new administration in Washington to
regularize millions of illegal Mexicans currently
living in the United States. Castaneda is also
hoping to expand legal opportunities for the
hundreds of thousands of future illegals coming
into the U.S.
I
hope George W. Bush takes the gloves off for this
one. I’m all in favor of having good relations
with our neighbors, but for this recent insult,
Mexico needs to be reminded of just who we are and
what we do to support their country and people. We
have been and continue to be, more than generous
to our neighbors. If they do not like the way the
U.S is treating illegals who commit violent crimes
in our country, then keep them in Mexico.
